When are AFL team lineups announced?

Release times depend on which day each match is played:

• Thursday matches → Wednesday 6:20pm AEST
• Friday, Saturday & Sunday matches → Thursday 6:20pm AEST
• Monday matches → Sunday 6:20pm AEST

Late changes can still occur right up until the bounce, so check back closer to the game.

How does the AFL bench and substitute work?

Accepted Answer

Each AFL team names a 23-player matchday squad: 18 on the field, 4 on the interchange bench, and 1 medical substitute. The medical sub can only be activated when a player is medically ruled out, and they wear jersey 23. Teams can rotate the four bench players freely throughout the match.
